The 1995 Tamil cult gangster film Baasha in which Thalaivar Rajinikanth plays a dual role of a dreaded don & a docile peace loving auto driver was a super duper hit at the box office & was also remade in Kannada, Bengali in India & in Bangladesh as well.

During the making of the Hindi film Hum (1991), its director Mukul S. Anand had considered and discussed with Rajinikanth (who plays Inspector Kumar) a potential scene, where Shekhar (Amitabh Bachchan) would help his younger brother Vijay (Govinda) get a seat in the Police Academy. Anand discarded the scene because he did not find it suitable, but Rajinikanth felt it had the potential to develop into a script for a possible feature film. Rajinikanth discussed the scene with director Suresh Krissna who also found it to be interesting. The title Baasha for the film was also suggested by Rajinikanth to Krissna who in turn suggested to Rajinikanth that a Muslim connection to the script was needed.
Thus, a discarded scene from ‘Hum’ became the foundation for Baasha where Rajinikanth's docile auto driver character in the film, Manikkam, helps his sister Geetha (Yuvarani) get admission to the medical college she had applied for & Krissna weaves the rest of the film's story around that scene. Initially the docile character Manikkam was written as a bus conductor in keeping with Rajini’s actual life but Rajini liked the auto driver character more as he felt that it would appeal more to the commonest man.

In one of the action sequences involving the protagonist in a face-off against the antagonist's henchmen, the iconic dialogue “Naan oru thadava sonna, nooru thadava sonna maadiri” (If I say something even once, it's as though I've said it a hundred times) is spoken. Rajinikanth wanted a dialogue that is simple yet effective, as it would be used in a sequence where another side (the don) of the hitherto docile protagonist (auto driver) was to be revealed. Rajinikanth eventually came up with the dialogue that became such an iconic punch line. The dialogue occurs five times in the film & to this day is accompanied by wolf whistles & screams. So much to say about this film, its music, its dialogues, its characters, its Rajinisms, its role in creating of the “Thalaivar”. अबNoरMal pays tribute to the Forever Style Mannan (King) in its own unique फilmy नautanki way for posterity as a collector’s item!
