The Bodhi Tree (""tree of awakening"") was a large and ancient sacred fig tree located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar. Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment or Bodhi circa 500 BCE under it. In religious iconography, the Bodhi Tree is recognizable by its heart-shaped leaves, which are usually prominently displayed. In our quest for creatively representing the Bodhi on a Choli back we decided to use one of the ancient forms of embroidery from Rajasthan in India - the Gota patti or Gota work. It uses the appliqué technique. Small pieces of zari ribbon are appliquéd onto the fabric with the edges sewn down to create elaborate patterns.
Gota is a gold or silver ribbon and lace from Lucknow. Originally real gold and silver metals were used to embroider but these were eventually replaced by copper coated with silver & nowadays the copper has been replaced by polyester film which is further metalized and coated to make it affordable.
The Gota patti process is lengthy and time-consuming. The first step is to trace the design on the fabric. This is done by placing a tracing paper with the design on the fabric and spreading a paste of chalk powder over it. Depending on the design, the gota is cut and folded into various shapes. It is then appliquéd by hemming or back-stitching it on the fabric. Many alluring patterns are thus embroidered on the cloth & thus was born our “Bodhi” Choli. We have used both gold & silver gota to recreate the heart shaped leaves of the Bodhi tree. Don’t miss the gold & silver gota lace pleats around the sleeves for some drama!
