Pongal is celebrated for four continuous days. Maattu Pongal is the 3rd day of the Pongal celebrations and is observed on the second day of the Thai month in the Tamil calendar which as per the Gregorian calendar in 2021 is today the 15th January. The word ‘maattu’ in Tamil signifies ‘the bull’ and thus the day of Maattu Pongal is dedicated as celebration of the cattle, especially the bulls as they play an important role in helping the farmers to grow crops.
On Maattu Pongal, the cattle are bathed and their horns are painted and decorated with radiating metal caps. Flower garlands, tinkling bells and multi-colored beads are tied in their necks. The cattle owners sprinkle saffron water with mango leaves on the cows and offer prayers to protect them from all evils.
‘Jallikattu’ that is an important village sport also forms an integral part of Maattu Pongal celebrations. This activity is observed with full expectations and enthusiasm in the villages of Tamil Nadu. In Jallikattu, young men in the village chase fierce bulls to grab the money tied in their horns.
